Composites

Meetings: Thursdays @ 7 pm

Composites manufactures all body panels including the body covering. We work with the Aerodynamics Team to build feasible designs.

Sam Madhanmohan
Composites Lead

I have been fascinated by carbon fiber on race cars forever. The first time I saw the composite work done by Dallas Formula Racing, I fell in love. Finding this team was one of the best things to happen in my life, as I felt like I had finally found my group of people. I have been working with composites relentlessly to learn and to gain as much experience as I can to positively impact the team’s aspirations. In the composites team, we not only fabricate carbon fiber parts for the car but also design and optimize parts by working closely with other sub-teams, facilitating members of the team to grow into talented engineers.

Projects

Aero Package
Work with sponsors to integrate composite manufacturing techniques: resin infusion, wet layups, and pre-preg

Sidepods & Nosecone
Work closely with the aerodynamics team to develop carbon fiber nosecone and sidepods

Vehicle Dynamics
Develop an understanding of carbon fiber’s weight reduction on high speeds

Skills

Design molds using CAD software
Use CAD software to do finite element analysis and verify others Oversee and consult on manufacturable composite parts
Report and document the engineering process
Determine which materials to use and how to use them safely

Each member will leave the team with the understanding of why we use the materials we use, why one manufacturing technique is better than another, how to manage and communicate with other sub teams, and learn how to manage an individual project to see it through to the end.

New Members

By joining the composites team new members will learn more than just how to make molds and manufacture parts. We host classes every other week that goes in-depth into composite theory for members to increase their knowledge and understanding. The class also has a lab portion in which members would be able to have hands on experience working on layups and more.
