Membership Questions

How do I join the team? How do I get involved?

Welcome to the team. We are excited to have you! We don’t require any experience or prior knowledge – our leads will teach you everything you need to know.

Here’s how you can join the team and get involved:

  1. Come by the shop (ECSW 1.455) or fill out this form to join the Dallas Formula Racing Discord
  2. Join the channel(s) for the subteam(s) you are interested in
  3. Introduce yourself and ask any questions such as “How can I get involved? Are there any projects that need an extra hand? Here are my skills…”
  4. Find meeting dates for subteam meetings in “IC Meeting Times”
  5. Attend meetings and get started on projects!

It’s as easy as that! See you soon at one of our meetings!

Can I still join the team if I don’t have any experience?

Yes! We are open to all UT Dallas students at any skill level or major, and we will teach the skills needed to be successful on the team. All we ask for is the willingness to learn!

How can I be successful on the team?

Some tips to be successful on the team:

  1. Be willing to learn
  2. Ask questions
  3. Take initiative

Does my major matter when joining?

All majors are welcome to join. If you do not have the skills or knowledge for a certain subsystem, you can be paired with an experienced member to learn from.

For those interested in joining, but would not like to contribute to the engineering side, we have a business sub-team as well that works on marketing, event planning, and fundraising.

What can I do as a member?

It takes a village to build a car and requires months of dedication. The process includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Part design
  • Data Analysis
  • Manufacturing
  • Testing
  • Marketing/Fundraising

What is the time commitment to the team?

There is not a required time commitment to the team, so you can decide what time commitment works best with your schedule. We recommend at least attending weekly sub team meetings and taking on projects to get the most of your experience.

Can I be on more than one sub team?

Yes, but expect to be assigned a project for each sub team that you join. Don’t take on more than you can handle with your schedule because it is important to the team to meet our deadlines.

Where can I find out about meetings?

Check out your sub-team’s channel or #calendar on Slack. If you can’t find it there, ask a lead!

If I am unavailable during the meetings, can I come in at another time?

Schedule a time with the respective system lead to catch up.

Where is the shop located?

ECSW 1.455. Ring the doorbell to be let in.

How do I get shop access?

Only team leads are given card access to the shop.

How do I become a lead?

We will have applications for open lead positions when positions open up, typically after each competition season, where our Admin/System Leads will pick the best applicant. The following may increase your chances of getting selected:

  • Being well-versed in vehicle dynamics
  • Understanding system limits
  • Having an effective engineering process
  • Being an effective teammate
  • Working closely with all leads
  • Having proficient communication skills with your team
  • Being an active and hard-working member of DFR
  • Taking initiative on projects
  • Contributing unique interpretations within FSAE limits
  • Committing more of your time to the team throughout the year
  • Attending team volunteering opportunities
  • Taking on independent projects
  • Learning new or needed skills for vehicle production

How can I become a driver?

Drivers are required to attend and assist testing day procedures. The seat is earned through commitment to the team and earning the trust of the leads and admin which must be kept to maintain the driver seat.

To drive at competition, there will be a form of tryouts conducted towards the end of the spring semester leading up to competition. You must already have earned the trust of the team and be cleared to drive beforehand.

Do not expect to show up to a testing session and drive your first time there.

Competition Questions

What is Formula SAE?

It is an international engineering design competition for university students where teams design, fabricate, and compete a formula-style race car each year. For more information, click here.

How does competition work? What do we do in competition?

Competition is composed of the following:

  • Technical inspections for racing eligibility
    • Scrutineering
    • Tilt Test (cannot leak fluid. Checked at 45-deg. Cannot roll over at 60-deg.)
    • Noise Test (car is quieter than 110 dB)
    • Brake test (four wheels must lock up and stop in a straight line)
  • Racing events: Timed attacks (No wheel to wheel racing)
    • Acceleration: Drag race
    • Skid pad: Figure 8 circuit
    • Autocross: Coned course
    • Endurance + Efficiency: 22 km cone course (15 laps. 2 drivers)
      • Efficiency: No refueling is allowed in endurance, how much fuel you use is measured for an efficiency score.
  • Presentations
    • Business
    • Cost
    • Design

How can I go to competition?

Members who attend competition are selected based on their skill level, time commitment to the team, and if they will be participating in a presentation.
