Dallas Formula Racing competed at UTA Autocross on October 6th-8th. Congratulations to our new six drivers for having such a successful weekend. It was the first time our team had officially competed with our aerodynamics package and a resized half shaft – a point of failure in the 2023 competition. The team is incredibly proud of all of the accomplishments that we have made thus far.

On Friday, our team had the opportunity to network with UTA Racing and other FSAE teams attending the event and tour UTA’s facilities, including their machine shop, composites room, and more. Saturday was an exciting day as our drivers were able to gain experience on a faster and more representative track with a new aero package. Our team ran the entire day and did not face any catastrophic failures.

New members were able to watch the team operate and also learn from other teams as they asked questions about the paddock. Overall, this was a great experience for old and new members and a stark contrast from last year’s UTA Autocross, in which the vehicle mostly sat in the paddock awaiting repairs.

Sunday was a more competitive racing atmosphere, and while we weren’t the fastest, we saw many vehicles face extensive failures from blown intakes, broken rod ends, and other failures. Our team continued our success and stride from Saturday and competitively raced for all 18 laps.

Derek Fuhr, one of our composites leads, recounts his favorite memory from UTA Autocross:

“Getting to drive on a full-sized course was really fun because I was able to push the car to limits that I haven’t ever before.”

He continues, talking about how proud he is of the team for building a car that was able to reliably perform the entire weekend – a huge accomplishment for the team.

Derek recalls fondly of the team’s energy at UTA, saying that he was excited to see that “everyone was happy and looking like they were enjoying their time.”

Brandon Shaffer, our Powertrain lead, adds that he was proud of the team for the reliability that the car has achieved, and “we can focus instead on the driving and learning how the car wants you to drive it.”

His biggest accomplishment?
Not hitting any cones on Sunday, he says jokingly.

“The team has shown some real progress this year, with this being the first time the team has successfully and reliably competed with a full aerodynamic package!

I’m excited to see what’s in store and look forward to continue leading the team onwards.”

Grant Mitchell, Chief Engineer

The team is in good spirits following UTA Autocross and looks forward to continuing the momentum as we enter chassis-building season. Thank you for the support, and we are excited to continue to share our journey with you!
